Prompt 7: Should Nurses Belong to Labor Unions?

Labor unions are organized associations of workers, formed to protect and further their rights and interests. Basically they are created to help workers get what they think they deserve, even if they have to go on strike to do it. Their is two sides to the controversy of if a nurse should belong to a labor union.

People who think they should belong to labor unions believe:

  • Can't trust management
  • Should have a say in your salary
  • Can use threat of strike
  • Bargain for better conditions

People who think they should not belong to labor unions believe:
  • There is a taboo around unions
  • Paying regular dues
  • Sometimes a strike still does not work
    • A strike means guilty mind for nurses who left their patients
  • Breaking the nursing code of conduct
