Travel Nursing

When you think of nursing, you typically imagine a nurse in a doctors office, hospital, or nursing home. What many don't know is that there is subfield of nursing that is designed to hire nurses to travel to specific a location, and work there for a set amount of time. This subfield is known as travel nursing.

How exactly does travel nursing work?
Travel nurses typically take on new assignments and travel to a location for 8-13 weeks. In some cases, they take on assignments for even longer.

Where can they work? Anywhere! Travel nurses can travel to anywhere that they desire and work at any place that is in need of a nurse for as long as they want.

What are the benefits of travel nursing?
  • Flexible hours
  • Higher pay
  • The ability to choose where you want to go
  • Housing and living arrangements are usually taken care of
  • Ability to receive overtime pay
  • Health and medical benefits (health, dental, and vision insurance)
  • Paid travel cost and housing
  • Travel nurses are needed in a wide variety of specialties
  • Bonuses to retirement savings funds
  • Working at many different facilities with many different people, their skills keep building up
  • Bonuses at the end of an assignment with a patient
  • Full-time positions can be acquired

How much to travel nurses typically make?
In general, travel nurses make on average $75,000 a year. Depending on the location, specialty, and overtime pay they have the ability to make more. Their pay is also slightly influenced by the length of their assignment to a patient. The shorter the assignment the more pay, and vice versa, the longer the assignment the less pay. Weird right? This is not what I would have expected, but since the nurse won't be moving as often, and that is essentially more convenient.

Why are travel nurse's so important?
Due to the nursing shortage, nurses are in high demand. There are often shortages in many places, and a travel nurse can be hired there for a short period to fill the gap.

When choosing a career in the nursing profession, travel nursing is one to look at!

  1. I am going into this field and I have never heard of this! Obviously I was aware that people occasionally move with their jobs but this is very unique. I am definitely going to look into this!
