Rehabilitation Nurse

What do they do?

A rehabilitation nurse provides care for patients experiencing any temporary, progressive, or permanent illness that interrupt their normal functioning and lifestyle.  The age group of patients dealt with in this field of nursing vary from infants to elderly people.

Who makes a good rehab nurse?

Important qualities of the ideal rehabilitation nurse are that of independence while balancing simultaneously with teamwork, desire to do best to make a change, patience and innovative thinking. These are obvious characteristics of most nurses and any person working with other people.  It is especially important to obtain patience with people in the rehabilitation center because it is often a recovery area dealing with post surgical patients or many other factors that contribute to difficulty.

What are the pros and cons of this career?

Every career comes with pros and cons. In this particular occupation challenges faced include difficult patient conduct and grief, financial constraints, and heavy workloads and paperwork.  However; the positives always include the possibility of discharging a patient healthy and free of disability or illness while also having had built a relationship working with them.

Academic Requirements necessary:

-Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing (BSN)
-After 2 years of experience, must qualify to take Rehabilitation Registered Nurse Exam
-Many earn Master's Degree of Science in Nursing (MSN)

I think this occupation would serve as an ideal reminder to recognize how fortunate we are.  As you're helping people overcome their surgeries and get back to living normally you can learn from them at the same time.

  1. This post was very interesting to read. I didn't know that there was a certain type of nurse that works with those who are in rehabilitation. Besides academic requirements, are there any other requirements for this type of job?
